Beautiful Block Paved Driveway in Bury St Edmunds
We recently completed a large block paved driveway project in Bury St Edmunds, delivering a stunning transformation that enhanced both the functionality and appearance of this spacious property. The client was looking to replace their tired, outdated concrete surface with a modern, long-lasting solution that offered better kerb appeal and a clean, practical finish.

The original driveway was cracked and showing signs of wear and tear. It felt dull and outdated, with no clear boundary and didn’t complement the property’s exterior.
After:
The driveway is now completely transformed! It has a clean, defined and modern finish. The herringbone pattern adds texture and strength while the border added a smart frame.
Process Overview
1. Site Clearance and Excavation
The project started with removing the existing worn concrete and preparing the whole area with a full-depth excavation. This step was essential to remove all the unstable materials and prepare for a solid foundation.
2. Installing the Foundation
A compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base was laid and levelled across the entire area. This provides the crucial strength and durability that is needed to support the new block paving and daily vehicle traffic.
3. Edging and Layout
Charcoal blocks were installed as edging, around the perimeter driveway, neatly framing the driveway and offering a clean, precise finish. A matching charcoal step was also installed at the front door, using bull-nosed blocks. This provided safe and convenient access to the home.
4. Laying the Block Paving
We used high-quality multi-toned block paving in a herringbone pattern, laid over a sharp sand bed. The herringbone pattern enhances not only the look and style of the driveway, but also maximises strength, preventing future movement of the blocks. The colour choice blends perfectly with the property.
5. Finishing Touches
The driveway was compacted, and kiln-dried sand was brushed into the joints to lock the blocks in place. Final touches included tidy edge cuts, cleanup and a final inspection to ensure a flawless finish.
The finished driveway is a spacious, elegant and highly durable surface that instantly lifts the appearance of the entire front garden. The mix of warm tones with the sharp edging offers a bold contrast, and the new step adds both style and practicality. This is a long term, low maintenance solution that will serve the homeowners for years to come.
