Block Paved Driveway Installation in Ipswich
We recently completed a block paved driveway transformation for a homeowner in Ipswich, turning an outdated and worn concrete drive into a stylish, practical and long-lasting feature. The old driveway had seen better days, with uneven surfaces and areas where the concrete had broken away, making access difficult and reducing the property’s overall kerb appeal.
Before & After
Before:
The original driveway was a worn and uneven mix of concrete and gravel, with visible cracks and erosions that made it both unattractive and impractical. The narrow, aged surface lacked proper drainage, leading to water pooling in certain areas, and the overall look of the driveway did little to complement the property’s exterior.
After:
The newly installed block paved driveway has completely transformed the space, creating a smooth, durable, and visually appealing entrance to the home. Featuring a herringbone pattern with a contrasting border, the new driveway is not only stylish but also a hard-wearing and low-maintenance, providing a practical and long-lasting solution that enhances the property’s kerb appeal.
Process Overview
1. Removing the Existing Driveway
The first step was to remove the old concrete and gravel driveway, which had become worn and uneven over time. We excavated the entire area to a suitable depth, ensuring there was enough room for a solid sub-base and new block paving.
2. Preparing the Base
To ensure a long-lasting driveway, we installed an MOT Type 1 sub-base, which was compacted in layers for maximum strength and durability. This step is crucial for preventing future movement or sinking of the blocks.
3. Installing the Edge Restraints
Edging blocks were set in place using concrete to provide a strong frame for the driveway. These borders not only improve durability but also add a sleek and defined look to the finished result.
4. Laying the Block Paving
For this project, we used warm-toned block paving in a classic herringbone pattern, which provides excellent interlocking strength. A contrasting light grey border was added to frame the driveway beautifully, giving it a more structured and premium appearance.
5. Compaction and Sanding
Once the blocks were in place, a plate compactor was used to bed them in firmly. Kiln-dried sand was brushed into the joints, locking the blocks together and preventing movement over time.
The finished block paved driveway has completely transformed the front of the property, creating a welcoming entrance that is both functional and stylish. The homeowner now enjoys a smooth, hard-wearing surface that requires minimal maintenance and will stand the test of time.
