Project Scope & Overview
We recently completed this stunning block paved driveway installation in Newmarket, Suffolk, transforming an old, worn concrete surface into a modern, durable and visually striking entrance.
The existing driveway had become tired and dated, with a plain concrete finish that offered very little kerb appeal. The homeowners wanted something more contemporary, low maintenance, and in keeping with the style of their property — while also improving drainage and long-term durability.
To ensure a long-lasting finish, we followed a thorough installation process:
1. Excavation & Ground Preparation
We carefully excavated the existing concrete driveway and removed all waste materials from site. The ground was then prepared and levelled to the correct depth to accommodate a new sub-base.
2. Sub-Base Installation
A high-quality MOT Type 1 sub-base was installed and compacted in layers to create a strong and stable foundation. Proper compaction is essential for preventing movement and ensuring longevity.
3. Edging & Border Detail
To frame the driveway and create contrast, we installed a dark charcoal block border around the perimeter. This helps define the space and adds a premium finish.
At the entrance, we incorporated a decorative header course with square detailing, creating a stylish focal point as you enter the property.
4. Block Paving Installation
The main driveway was laid in a classic herringbone pattern, using warm brindle-toned blocks that complement the brickwork of the home beautifully. Herringbone is one of the strongest laying patterns, making it ideal for driveways that need to withstand vehicle weight.
5. Finishing Touches
Once laid, kiln-dried sand was brushed into the joints and the entire surface was compacted to lock everything firmly into place. The result is a smooth, even, and durable finish.

The original driveway consisted of an ageing concrete surface that had lost its appearance over time. While functional, it lacked character and didn’t complement the property.
