We recently completed this bespoke block paved driveway installation in Woolpit, Suffolk, transforming a simple front garden into a spacious and visually striking driveway.
The original frontage consisted of a lawned area with limited parking space and minimal definition. The homeowners wanted to maximise usable driveway space while creating a design that stood out and complemented the property’s brickwork.
Our solution combined a durable herringbone block paving layout with a custom diamond centre feature and contrasting charcoal border for a bold, premium finish.
Removing the Existing Front Garden
The project began with clearing the existing lawn and preparing the area for full driveway construction.
All vegetation and topsoil were removed, and the site was excavated to the correct depth. This ensured enough space for a proper structural build-up, which is essential for driveways designed to carry regular vehicle traffic.
The levels were carefully adjusted to maintain suitable drainage away from the property.
Sub-Base Installation
A high-quality MOT Type 1 sub-base was installed and compacted in layers to create a strong and stable foundation.
Proper compaction prevents settlement and movement over time. This stage is crucial for ensuring the finished block paved driveway performs well for years to come.
Block Paving & Design Details
The main driveway area was laid in a classic herringbone pattern using contemporary grey blocks. Herringbone is one of the strongest laying patterns available, making it ideal for driveways.
To elevate the design, we installed a custom diamond feature at the centre of the driveway. This detail creates a focal point and adds character without overwhelming the overall appearance.
A charcoal block border was fitted around the perimeter, framing the driveway and adding contrast. A subtle red accent course was incorporated to tie in with the property’s existing brickwork, creating a cohesive and well-balanced finish.
Finishing Process
Once all blocks were laid, kiln-dried sand was brushed into the joints and the entire driveway was compacted to lock everything securely in place.
The final result is a smooth, level and durable driveway that combines strength with eye-catching design.
