Resin Driveway with Charcoal Border | Felixstowe, Suffolk

This recent project in Felixstowe involved replacing an ageing driveway with a modern resin bound surface, complete with a contrasting charcoal border to frame the space.

The existing driveway had started to deteriorate visually and structurally. The surface looked tired, the levels were uneven in places, and it no longer suited the overall appearance of the property. The homeowners wanted a cleaner, more contemporary finish that would also improve drainage and reduce maintenance.

Resin bound surfacing provided the ideal solution.

Removing the Old Surface

The first step was breaking out and removing the original driveway. Once cleared, we excavated to the required depth to allow for a proper build-up.

All waste was removed from site and the ground was inspected and prepared to ensure a stable base for the new installation. Getting this stage right is what determines how well a driveway performs long term.

Building a Solid Foundation

With excavation complete, we installed a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base to create a strong and reliable foundation.

Each layer was compacted thoroughly to prevent movement or settlement. Proper base preparation is especially important with resin bound driveways, as the finished surface reflects any imperfections beneath it.

Defining the Space with a Charcoal Border

To give the driveway structure and contrast, we installed a charcoal block border around the perimeter.

The darker edging frames the lighter resin perfectly and gives the driveway a crisp, defined finish. It also helps separate the driveway from surrounding landscaping and brickwork, creating a neat and balanced appearance.

Laying the Resin Bound Surface

The resin and aggregate were mixed on site and applied by hand to create a seamless, even finish.

One of the key benefits of resin bound surfacing is permeability. Water drains naturally through the surface rather than pooling on top, which makes it a practical choice for coastal areas like Felixstowe where heavy rainfall can be an issue.

The finished surface is smooth, hard-wearing and slip resistant.

Before After

Before:

The original driveway consisted of an older surface that had lost its appearance over time. While it still functioned, it did little to enhance the property.

The space lacked definition, the finish looked dated, and the surface had begun to show signs of wear. The homeowners wanted something that would modernise the entrance and create a stronger first impression.

After:

The new resin driveway has completely refreshed the front of this Felixstowe home.

The finished result delivers:

  • A modern and seamless appearance
  • Strong visual contrast with the charcoal border
  • Improved drainage performance
  • A durable surface built to last
  • A low-maintenance solution

The lighter aggregate tone complements the property beautifully, while the border adds structure and definition without overpowering the space.
